Herding Trials Information

Dear Collie Community:
This has been an unseasonably cold winter for New England. While the snow fall is above average, it is the cold weather that has kept everything from melting and therefore, many parts of Massachusetts and the surrounding area has at least a foot of snow still on the ground. Because of the high volume of snow and ice, the owner of the herding venue had to cancel our national specialty event. It would not be safe for either animals or humans to herd in these conditions. We do not expect the snow and ice to melt in time for the show.

Several people have worked tirelessly to locate another herding venue. Unfortunately, the weather conditions are pretty much the same within a 4 hour drive of the conformation site. We have not been able to secure an indoor arena that meets our needs to offer both sheep and duck trials.

We regret that we must forgo offering a sheep trial at this year's national. Instead, we will be offering 2 duck trials on Sunday, April 6th at the Big E in W.Springfield MA, which is the site of the conformation, rally and obedience events.

While we understand that some people may be upset by this turn of events, please be assured that every possible alternative was examined and this is the only solution possible. If you have entered the sheep trials, your entry fee will be returned to you.

The Most Valuable Collie rules have been changed to reflect the absence of the sheep trials.

If anyone has any questions, please contact either myself or the Herding Chair, Barbara Corriveau. She can be reached at crispincol@aol.com
or 603-835-2160.

Sincerely,
Laura LaBounty

Saturday April 5 (set up day) CCA will have herding instinct testing on ducks in Barn C adjacent to the trial ring, starting at 2 PM. Colleen will handle the dogs and Ann-Marie will judge. People can pre-register with the trial secretary or sign up that day. Cost is $45 per run. Dogs who pass once can get a CCA Herding Instinct Certification. There is a limit of 25 runs because there is a limited number of ducks.

Sunday (day of trial) CCA will have herding instinct testing on ducks in Barn C adjacent to the trial ring. Colleen will handle the dogs and Carol Donnelly will judge. People can pre-register with the trial secretary or sign up that day. Cost is $45 per run. Dogs who pass once can get a CCA Herding Instinct Certification. Dogs who pass twice under two different judges qualify for the AKC Herding Instinct Certification. There is a limit of 25 runs due to the limited number of ducks that are available. CCA hopes to be able to start the testing at 10 AM and run it concurrently with the trial with some breaks during the day.

Chair: Martha Skilton -- alexycollies@yahoo.com

Wouldn't your state like to participate in what has become one of the high points of the National? The State Basket raffle lets you share what your state or area is famous for. Each year, everyone enjoys seeing and bidding on the wonderful goodies from states representing our great country. If you are attending the National from outside the United States, this is your chance to showcase your homeland as well. We ask that nothing is perishable and you provide a list of the contents for the prospective bidders. 50% of the proceeds from this silent auction will go to Collie Rescue League of New England and the balance to support the show.

Bidding closes right after Juniors Judging on Saturday morning.
